A companion on appointment day
Clearwater is the county seat of Pinellas County, and it is a city of doctors’ appointments. Morton Plant Hospital, part of BayCare, has stood on its bluff over Clearwater Harbor since 1916. HCA Florida Largo Hospital has a Clearwater campus, and Bay Pines VA runs a clinic on US 19 North. For a senior juggling specialists, that adds up to a lot of appointments and a lot of instructions.
Here is what an appointment day looks like with Gina through medical appointment accompaniment.
The day before. Gina checks with your parent and, if you like, with you. What is the visit for? What has changed since last time? Which questions need answers? She writes them down, along with the current medication list your parent or family keeps, so nothing is forgotten in the exam room.
At the appointment. Gina meets your parent and stays for the visit. She helps with check-in paperwork, listens, and takes notes on what the doctor says, including any new tests, referrals or follow-up dates. If something is unclear, she asks.
Afterward. If a new prescription was sent in, Gina can pick it up at the pharmacy on the way. That evening the family gets a plain summary of the visit. Gina does not manage, sort or give medications. Her role is to make sure the right people have the right information.
Her background as a Florida Licensed Practical Nurse helps here. She understands medical language and knows what to ask, but on these visits she is your parent’s companion, not their nurse.
When there are several specialists
A parent who sees a cardiologist, a primary care doctor and an eye specialist can end up with three sets of instructions and no one holding them together. Gina can keep a simple running record of each visit she attends, so the notes from one office are at hand when the next doctor asks what changed. Families who share that record with each other stay on the same page.
Between appointments
Most weeks are not about doctors at all. A weekly check-in visit keeps someone in touch with how your parent is really doing, and errand services take care of returns, pickups and the post office. Everything Gina offers is on the senior concierge services page.
Mainland and beach
Clearwater Beach is part of the city, separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway and linked by the Clearwater Memorial Causeway. Pier 60 and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium are out there. Gina serves both sides, so a parent with a beach condo and a doctor on the mainland is covered either way.
Downtown, Park Street Terminal is a major PSTA hub, and the Suncoast Beach Trolley starts its run down Gulf Boulevard from there. The Clearwater Public Library System has five libraries, and its main library opened in 2004.
When you are not nearby
If you are coordinating a parent’s care from another state, appointment days are usually the hardest part to manage from a distance. Gina can be your eyes and ears in the room. Help for elderly parents from out of state explains how she keeps families updated. When a need goes beyond what a concierge does, such as hands-on care, she can suggest local care resources.
